I'm currently in Indiana and the dove stays at my art studio that I share with a few artists and other creatives.

I was in Colorado on an artist retreat when the Blessing Dove came across my path. I had just received news that my father had died of a heart attack, and I was in the first throes of grief. The dove felt like a tangible representation of the Lord’s presence with me, something grounding me in the moment. Now, it sits on my desk where I work, a quiet symbol of peace.

I found my Blessing Dove in New York City many years ago. I think it was 2006. I was in Harlem walking to visit my sister who had an accident and was bedridden for a bit. I noticed the dove right away because it was sitting in a rusted space where the color contrast made it stand out. I picked it up and it comfortably slipped into the palm of my hand. I had no hesitation to take it with me to my sister’s, where I placed it near some of the flowers she had received to cheer up her recovery. It’s strange that so many years later, I found out about this project and the creator seeking stories about people like me who found a dove. It may be hard to believe, but my sister still has this little dove and it moves with her to each place she lives. I asked her for a pic of it today. Here it is sitting on her windowsill in her Chicago apartment. She said that it reminds her that she will make it through whatever comes her way.

Why Blessing Doves?

Long ago, I overheard a very sad conversation and felt a deep need to reach out and comfort. I was uncomfortable appearing in person and speaking to the person so I looked around my art studio and decided to give them one of the small porcelain doves I was casting. Anonymously I deposited it in their space and soon was rewarded by once again overhearing their grateful reaction to the gift. This exchange birthed the idea of Blessing Doves as a viable peace-making art project that I soon launched across the globe. As I traveled around the world I randomly placed the unidentified little doves for discovery. Almost 20 years later, the art project is still in action, with numerous volunteers expanding the heartwarming reach of the Blessing Doves.
